This year Guild of Medical Laboratory Directors 22nd Annual National Conference/AGM held in Aba, Abia State has come to an end with Prince (Dr) Elochuckwu Adibo elected National President.
This year’s conference theme was “Persistent Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) in Nigeria -Role of Private Medical Laboratories in it’s mitigation and possible Eradication.”
This year conference was declared opened by the Governor of Abia State his Excellency Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, represented by the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health, Abia State.
Prof. Lawrence Nwaneri Chigbu, Rector, Abia State College of Health Science and Management Technology delivered the keynote address on the theme.
The outgoing President of the GMLD, Mrs Chioma Austin-Onuorah commended the Federal Government on it’s efforts to strengthen the health care sector.
She also thanked the Central Bank of Nigeria for granting loans to enhance the work of the private sector but unfortunately regretted that private medical laboratories cannot access the loans due to some stringent measures attached to it.
The Registrar/CEO Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, Dr. Tosan Erhabor in his address which was delivered by MLS Christy Igwe congratulated the Guild of Medical Laboratory Directors for her success.
He further caution all Medical Laboratory Scientists against substandard practice in the use of unauthorized screening kits for the diagnosis of COVID-19.
The council registrar also promised a clampdown on quacks the moment things get stabilized in the country.
Award presentations were made to worthy individuals including the Registrar CEO MLSCN, wife of the governor of Abia state, and many other outstanding individuals.
The climax of the conference/AGM was the election into the National executive offices. Prince Elochuckwu Adibo was elected National President with 137 votes out of the total votes of 138. Before his election he was the Chairman, National Ad-hoc Committee on Advocacy and Laboratory Director/CEO of El-Lab Medical Diagnostics and Research Center, FESTAC Town, Lagos (ISO 15189:2012 Accredited Medical Laboratory).
