When a bee moves from flower to flower in search of nectar, little does it know that it is carrying out an important biological process of \u201cpollination\u201d. This allows the reproduction of the plant species. In like manner when a man in search of erotic satisfaction, or in an attempt to \u201cmultiply and replenish the earth\u201d, engages in sexual intercourse, he may be acquiring some microbes which he can transfer to his sexual partners and which may endanger his life.<\/p>\n
Africans place a lot of premium on childbearing. This culture is entrenched in polygamy, which is not novel to our traditional practices. Polygamy, had been practiced before the advent of Islam, and Christianity has minimized it to a great extent in areas where it is practiced. Whether in monogamous or polygamous homes, childbearing is of the utmost importance in society. The microbes that are sexually transmitted cause many cases of male infertility and female reproductive failure.<\/p>\n
The sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) could also cause discomfort, deformities, disabilities, psychological and emotional problems, marital tension and other social problems. Unfortunately, they are now on the increase worldwide. They are the commonest communicable diseases everywhere. Their effects are also becoming more devastating with the explosion of conditions like herpes, Hepatitis B and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).<\/p>\n
There is therefore a need at this point in time to disseminate knowledge on the STDs with the aim of helping people to recognize them and seek medical attention before irreparable damage is done. If this is not done one would have to say with John Donne (pronounced \u201cdone\u201d) who wrote the following verse when he went for a secret marriage with the daughter of a noble man, who in turn retaliated by confiscating their fortunes:<\/p>\n

This book will not only be of interest to ordinary people who are not experts in the medical sciences, but also to the health workers themselves because the teaching of STDs has not been well incorporated into the curricula of the different health manpower-development programmes in many medical schools.<\/p>\n
