{"id":5056,"date":"2023-10-05T20:24:14","date_gmt":"2023-10-05T20:24:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afrib.org.ng\/?p=5056"},"modified":"2023-10-05T20:24:16","modified_gmt":"2023-10-05T20:24:16","slug":"efcc-chairmanship-position-ripe-time-for-a-southerner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/afrib.org.ng\/?p=5056","title":{"rendered":"EFCC CHAIRMANSHIP POSITION; RIPE TIME FOR A SOUTHERNER"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was established in 2003 under the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo, among other objects to tackle corruption and other related federal crimes.<br \/>\nThe Commission has had seven successive Chairmen since inception, some of them being in acting capacity.<br \/>\nAs may be shown anon, after about twenty years of existence of the EFCC, a Southerner is yet to occupy the highest position in the Commission, in spite of the Commission boasting of good numbers of high-ranking Officers from the South.<br \/>\nAt inception, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu from Adamawa State (North East), became the Chairman and was at the helm for four years.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5058\" src=\"https:\/\/afrib.org.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot_20231005-211439-300x233.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afrib.org.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot_20231005-211439-300x233.jpg 300w, https:\/\/afrib.org.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot_20231005-211439.jpg 457w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br \/>\nIn 2007, Mrs. Farida Waziri from Benue State (North Central) became the EFCC boss and was in the position for four years.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan appointed Ibrahim Lamorde from Adamawa State (North East) as acting EFCC Chairman and was later confirmed by the Senate as substantive EFCC Chairman in 2012.<br \/>\nIn 2015, Ibrahim Magu from Borno State (North East) became EFCC Chairman (in acting capacity) and remained so until 2020 before he was removed.<br \/>\nIn 2020, Mohammed Umar Abba from Kano State (North West) replaced Ibrahim Magu as EFCC acting Chairman and was in the position for some months.<br \/>\nIn 2021, President Buhari appointed Abdulrasheed Bawa from Kebbi State (North West) as EFCC Chairman, until he was recently removed in 2023.<br \/>\nSince after the removal of Abdulrasheed Bawa, Adulkarim Chukkol from Borno State (North East) has been heading the Commission in an acting capacity.<br \/>\nAs the nation awaits the appointment of a substantive EFCC Chairman, there is a clarion call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider giving an opportunity to a Southern officer in the Commission, this is so for equity and fairness, as the Southern region is not short of capacity to occupy such position.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5057\" src=\"https:\/\/afrib.org.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot_20231005-211852-300x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afrib.org.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot_20231005-211852-300x264.jpg 300w, https:\/\/afrib.org.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot_20231005-211852.jpg 545w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br \/>\nA particular region (North) cannot continue to occupy the highest position of a Commission, at the detriment of the other region (South), this is also against the tenet and tenor of the Federal Character as enshrined in our laws.<br \/>\nIn the light of the foregoing, it won\u2019t be out of place to request that the President gives consideration to the plight of the Southerners and make bold to appoint the very first EFCC Chairman from the South, for equity and fairness.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4878\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4878\" style=\"width: 241px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4878\" src=\"https:\/\/afrib.org.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG-20230704-WA0010-241x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"241\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afrib.org.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG-20230704-WA0010-241x300.jpg 241w, https:\/\/afrib.org.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG-20230704-WA0010.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4878\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elabor Joe~<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Elabor Joe Agbebaku, Esq.<br \/>\nelaborjoe@gmail.com<br \/>\nEdo State<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was established in 2003 under the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo, among other objects to tackle corruption and other related federal crimes.
