[CAREER]: What To Do Before Quiting That Job.

Remember the saying “Never slam the door on the face of your employer if you need to leave”

Appropriately, being an employee do come with its own challenges, and so there are several reasons why you might be considering quitting that job.

From having to put up with a lot of toxicity from your employer, the management and down to your colleagues, to getting paid a salary that does not in anyway align with the value and effort you are bringing to the table.

Or maybe you are just in search for better opportunities that will take you a step higher in your career ladder.

But before you leave…..

1. TRY ADRESSING THE BONES OF CONTENTION

For example, if you are dissatisfied with the take home pay, you can request for a salary review on the background of your value offering and other factors, like the expenses you have to incurr on a daily basis in the course of your duty.

By the ways, a salary negotiation before accepting a job offer would’ve taken care of this from the start.

If these issues cannot be fix, then you can start giving serious thoughts to quitting as enduring through it may lead to resentment and unproductvity.

2. LEARN A NEW SKILL

While still on your current job, you can take up learning new skills to develop yourself and prepare you to fit into other opportunities.
And in fact, you can learn relevant skills that can help you improve on your current job role.

Aside from hard skills, Soft skills like problem solving, emotional intelligence, interpersonal and communication skills, negotiation skills and critical thinking skills are transferable from one role to another and should be invested in.

However, if your efforts are not duly rewarded, you can give serious thoughts to seeking better oppurtunities.

3. GET ACTIVE WITH JOB HUNTING

People make the mistake of leaving a job when they do not have another to fall back on. The job hunting process is agreably hard, and except you have one to fall back on, you’ll spend quite a while in the job market.

Except the reasons for quitting are valid enough, i advice you stay on your current job and apply the best approaches to job hunting.

Networking is an effective approach to job hunting these days, and linkedin is connecting job seekers to their desired roles and salary expectations everyday.

4. DRAFT YOUR RESIGNATION LETTER

A resignation letter is aimed at maintaining professionalism, while at the same time creating a positive record for you. It should be polite and less critical regardless of the reasons behind your decision.

Show appreciation for the opportunities given to you to function in whatever role, because whether you like it or not, you have grown since the first day you were handed your employment letter.

5. LEAVE ON A POSITIVE NOTE; DO NOT BANG THE DOOR

No matter the reasons for your decision to quit, do not leave a job filled with so much resentment that you are pushed to have a faceoff with your employer.

Especially if it is a professional role, you will need that job experience on your CV.
