The recent claim by the army that the governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu invited them to the protest ground at Lekki toll plaza throws up many more questions than answers.
That the governor later admitted after days of blatant denials that only two protesters had died as against a multitude as claimed by some and the fact that he spoke from both sides of the mouth on some of the events that serenaded the military intervention/the shooting like a shivering fowl pulled out of a cold water filled ditch leaves much to be desired and a big question mark on his person and leadership style/credential.
According to what we know,the army is a unit under the control of the President (presidency) as the Commander-In-Chief of the armed forces so on that premise,only the president could command the army or any other armed forces unit into any operation/action and not any governor. But in exceptional cases where a state of anarchy is evident, the governor could then speak to the president to have military presence to restore law and order; the Lekki instance had not in anyway reached that point as it was a really peaceful protest therefore,military presence was in the first place absolutely uncalled for and misplaced.
So technically speaking, governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu couldn’t have invited the army,it was beyond his purview as a governor and only ‘Bubu’ (the presidency) could have as the Commander-In-Chief of the armed forces but Nigeria being a lawless estate that it is,anything is quite possible and the lawless army could have claimed they received an order or invite from some person(s) other than their boss…and now scenarios of accusations and counter accusations on end are playing out right before us all!
The judicial panel set up by the state to look into the incident would almost certainly not achieve any meaningful result, we sabi how things dey run here but being the Chief executive of the state,if the governor denies knowledge of the shooting,some episodes prior or even after,then satan should take a bow but overall,haven’t we seen and experienced enough irresponsibility and irresponsible, irrational tendencies and reactions on the parts of our so called leaders?
