Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), was arrested on Friday night, June 9, 2023, by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Before his arrest, Emefiele had been embroiled in a controversy over his decision to run for president in the 2023 general elections. He had declared his intention to run for president on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) but had been suspended by President Bola Tinubu on June 8, 2023.
Emefiele’s arrest was reportedly linked to his alleged involvement in terrorism financing. The DSS had in January 2023 obtained a court order restraining the agency from arresting or detaining Emefiele but the agency had made several attempts to arrest the CBN governor.
The DSS had also gone to court to secure an order to effect Emefiele’s arrest but the court declined to grant the order.
