(World Cancer Day): Misinformation: A Reason Why Cancer Keeps Thriving – Rex Ikede.

Misinformation plays a vital role in endangering the health and safety of citizens when it comes to illness and diseases.

Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, despite advancements in early detection and treatment. While genetic and environmental factors contribute to its prevalence, misinformation plays a significant role in why cancer continues to thrive.

False beliefs about causes, treatments, and prevention often lead to delayed diagnosis, ineffective treatments, and poor health outcomes.

How Misinformation Fuels Cancer’s Prevalence

1. Myths About Cancer Causes:
Many people believe cancer is caused by exposure/usage of microwaves, deodorants, or even smartphones, while ignoring scientifically proven risk factors like smoking, poor diet, and prolonged sun exposure, etc. These misconceptions divert attention from real preventive measures that may help curb the menace of cancer.

2. Alternative “Cures” and Delayed Treatment:
The internet today is flooded with claims that herbal remedies, alkaline diets, or detox tea(s) can cure cancer. Most patients who believe these falsehoods often delay seeking medical treatment, allowing the disease to progress to advanced, harder-to-treat stages.

3. Fear and Stigma Prevent Early Diagnosis:
Misinformation about cancer being an automatic death sentence discourages people from seeking screenings or discussing symptoms early, and going for treatment. However, research shows that early detection significantly improves survival rates for many cancers.

4. Vaccine Hesitancy and Preventable Cancers:
HPV vaccines can prevent cervical cancer, yet misinformation linking them to infertility or other side effects leads to low vaccination rates in mostly rural communities. Similarly, myths about hepatitis B vaccination contribute to preventable cases of liver cancer as the case may be.

5. Distrust in Conventional Medicine:
Conspiracy theories that pharmaceutical companies suppress cancer cures make people skeptical of proven treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy. This mistrust prevents some patients from getting life-saving care when needed.

Combating Cancer Misinformation

Promote Evidence-Based Education: Reliable information from sources like the World Health Organization (WHO), American Cancer Society (ACS), and National Cancer Institute (NCI) should be trusted over social media rumors.
Encourage Regular Screening: Laboratory and diagnostic tests like mammograms, colonoscopies, and Pap smears save lives by detecting cancer early.
Debunk False Claims: Healthcare professionals and science communicators must actively correct misinformation and raise awareness both online and in physical space.
Improve Access to Care: Some patients rely on alternative medicine due to lack of access to healthcare and cost of treatment. Strengthening cancer care systems can reduce this reliance.

Misinformation about cancer delays treatment, promotes ineffective remedies, and increases mortality rates. By fostering scientific literacy, improving access to proper care, and challenging false claims, we can reduce the burden of cancer and save lives.

The fight against cancer is not just medical—it’s also a battle against misinformation.
