For reasons that I recount below, Osagie Ize-Iyamu guesstimated that the road to the seat of governance in Edo State would be a piece of cake. How colossal was his mistake.
Ize-Iyamu experienced the government muscle flexed by Adams Oshiomhole that denied him the helms of governance in 2016. Being the opposition candidate at the time, he must have privately admired the force of that muscle and wished he had run on the back of Oshiomhole. So when the political wind says villify Gov. Obaseki, Ize-Iyamu saw his chance and moved in. Quickly he accepted the invitation of his demi god Oshiomhole and together, they connived to disqualify Gov. Obaseki so Ize-Iyamu could take his seat. Their expectations were that Gov. Obaseki will either go the way of Ambode of Lagos State and without a fight, pack it in or at best, decamp to a small party and be lost in its non existent structure.
Three things happened almost at the same time which Oshiomhole, Ize-Iyamu and Capt Hosa, the financier of the plots, did not factor into the calculations. They did not expect Obaseki to fight back just like Ambode didn’t. Obaseki fought back and fought like a man! Shortly after Ize-Iyamu decamped to the APC and became a candidate of the party, their demi god was suspended from his seat as national chairman of the party. The scary meaning of this to Ize-Iyamu was that Oshiomhole would not be in the powerful position of national chairman going into the election. In the powerless position of suspended national chairman, he would not be able to muster that ‘federal might’ (whatever that is) which attracted him to the APC in the first place and which he always privately considered his undoing in the 2016 elections.
The third miscalculation was that they didn’t expect the PDP to accept Gov. Obaseki into its fold so quickly. This third happenstance hit the three Musketeers so hard that they swooned and are still reeling from the effect. They figured that the PDP had its aspirants who, in their thinking, were already too neck deep in their aspirations and campaigns to shift grounds for new comers. Another hurdle was that even if the PDP was to consider giving Obaseki it’s ticket, it would not give away the ticket of deputy governor to Obaseki’s deputy in the APC. They believed that Obaseki who felt indebted to his deputy who had, for good reason, fought his benefactor on his side would find a smaller party if PDP refused to grant the two tickets to them. The grounds shifted from beneath the feet of Oshiomhole, Capt. hosa and Ize-Iyamu when, against their prayers and insistence and after much negotiations, the PDP accepted the candidacy of Obaseki and Shuaibu. All three Musketeers died slowly from that day. In a last ditch effort, the Musketeers initiated concerted phone calls to PDP leaders not to accept Obaseki into the party. This last act was the most wicked of their actions. You drove a man out of your party and then attempted to determine where he goes afterwards. The heart of man is wicked indeed.
God still interferes in the affairs of men. This is His world and we are His creations. So then we are just pawns in His chess game which He can unquestionably move around as He chooses. Ize-Iyamu professes to be a servant of this great God and he never at any point pause to seek his counsel on his ambition which is now so blind that he would do anything to win the election. ANYTHING and that includes denying his calling if that is what it will take.
The road has ended for the APC quest. They see it, we see it and the people see it! The next face-saving thing for Ize-Iyamu to do is call Gov. Obaseki up and wish him well.
