In a recent publication by Mr. John Mayaki, wherein outright lies were maliciously employed to denigrate the progress and developments that have been witnessed in the Local Government areas of the State, and malign the sterling performances of the various Local Government Councils since the advent of the Obaseki administration, in order to provoke discontentment in the harmonious working relationship between the Governor and the Local Government Council Chairmen, as well as throw mud on the immaculate disposition and impeccable character of the people Governor who is famous for his shrewdness in economic matters and prudence in financial management.
From the contents of his daily verbiage, it is of no doubt that John Mayaki has become a very sad fellow, driven by hatred, anger and other social behavioural lack in morality and humanity, for only this could have propelled him into his recent politically motivated diatribe devoid of verity, and which bears no semblance, atom or iota of truth.
The allegations contained in the publication remain baseless, but perpetuated by agents of the dark to promote an outright falsehood deliberately invented and perfected by John Mayaki and members of his media, to deceive Edo masses who have over the years offered certitude towards the managerial synchrony between the Obaseki-led State Government and the Local Government Councils; the same masses who have developed the requisite commitment towards the reelection of Godwin Obaseki as Edo State Governor, in order to ensure developmental continuity.
However, for the records, it has become pertinent to state that the Government of Edo State under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Godwin Obaseki, does not “shortchange the state with deliberate over-deductions of funds meant for teachers salaries across the Local Government Councils”, nor make withdrawals from any Local Government Council, as alleged in the publication. As a matter of fact, neither the Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, nor the Commisioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Monday Osaigbovo, has the power to access the joint account for Local Government Councils in the State.
Whatever comes from the Federal Government goes directly to the Councils’ accounts. What the State Government does at the Joint Account Allocation Committee (JAAC) monthly meeting, is to work in collaboration with the Council Chairmen, in mapping out the statutory payments for teachers salaries, 5% allocation to Traditional Rulers, 1% training fund, 1% special intervention fund, and other statutory and mandatory areas that have been agreed upon by the various Councils, to enable them cater for the financial demands of cardinal administrative areas, and also meet their monthly financial responsibilities to their various Councils.
It is based on these mappings that the Councils make their monthly financial contributions to fulfill the statutory financial requirements. It is not in the place or power of the State Government or the Commissioner for Local Government, to deduct any dime from the Councils’ account. The State Government however, with knowledge of the financial strength of the Councils may decide to give financial interventions where it becomes necessary.
Indeed, it is disheartening that though these facts are out there and can be sought for and verified by anyone who wishes to, the likes of John Mayaki still choose to invent and conjure up their own facts from the thin air with hypocritical and false statistics meant for the sole purpose of promoting mischief, and like a confused pseudo stylo-statistician, pretends to prove with unmathematical formality what no one has yet pretended to believe.
The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Edo State, therefore deems it necessary to respond to the publication, not because the outright lies and propaganda emanating from this known hustler is worth its response, but to set the records straight for the innocent reading public whose intelligence has become a playground for John Mayaki and his cronies.
We are certain that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offenses Commission (ICPC), referenced in the malicious publication, are fed up already of his constant alleging without substantiation, and at some point may be compelled to institute a lawsuit against him, for his constant attempt to use their names in scoring cheap political points.
We are therefore using this opportunity to call on every indigene and resident of the State to discountenance the said publication by John Mayaki, as the Local Government Councils in accord with the performing and people-centred Governor of Edo State, are resolute in delivering the dividends of democracy to the people, and no amount of falsehood can impede that resolution.
